Memorial Scholarship Grant

Mission  Statement

VFW Post 981 was established for the primary purpose of providing assistance to Veterans and Veteran Assistance Organizations.

Thanks to the generosity of  esteemed Post member Wally Luettschwager, a scholarship grant fund was established in his honor in 2020 to provide financial aid to veterans and direct descendents of veterans who pursue scholastic endeavors as well as those who pursue vocational goals through trade schools.

Wally was a life-long resident of Arlington Heights.  After serving in combat in The Korean War, he returned to Arlington Heights and became an active member of VFW Post 981, serving in a number of positions including Commander.  The success of the Arlington Heights Memorial Day Parade is in no small way attributable to his efforts.  Today, it ranks as one of the largest and most successful parades in the suburban Chicago area.

For 2024 the family of deceased member Robert Henderson has funded an additional scholarship.  Bob was also a combat veteran of The Korean War ,receiving the Purple Heart for wounds suffered.  A Palatine resident Bob was a long-term active member of Post 981.

The fund will bestow two scholarship grants up to $3,000 for veterans or the direct lineage of honorably discharged veterans.  Active military and Reserve members are included in this description.  Preference will be given to residents in the Northwest suburban Cook County and adjacent areas in Lake County, with additional consideration to those towns and villages served by VFW Post 981.

Prospective grantees must submit an application for consideration.  Application forms, with all the necessary directions, are available on the Post website.  Potential recipients will be evaluated on both merit and need based on a comprehensive evaluation process.  Those chosen as finalists will be interviewed by the Scholarship Committee.

Applications for the upcoming year should be filed with our post not later than March 1 2024.  Finalist interviews will begin April 15.  The grant awards will be decided and the recipient notified prior to the May 15 public announcement.

Please refer to our website for any changes or additional information.  Preferential treatment will be not be made on the basis of  race, ethnicity, national origin or sexual orientation.  The Post reserves the right to modify or change the terms within the scholarship grant at any time.  Applicants are encouraged to review these terms from time to time on the Post website
